Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between a landscape architect and a landscape designer?

A landscape architect is state-licensed. Alan Tufts is licensed in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Licensed landscape architects produce the detailed construction documents contractors build from and that support permitting.

What size projects do you take on?

Our typical projects start at a $500,000 construction budget and go up from there.

What areas do you serve?

We're based in Wall Township and work throughout New Jersey. That includes Monmouth and Ocean counties, the Cape May County shore, and North and Central Jersey. Recent projects include homes in Rumson, Deal, Mantoloking, Avalon and Haddonfield.

What kinds of projects do you design?

Pools and pool surrounds, outdoor kitchens and living areas, terraces, driveways and entry courts, gardens, and landscape lighting. Many of our projects are coastal and bayfront homes on the Jersey Shore.

How does the process work?

We start with a meeting to learn your goals, budget and timeline. Then we send a proposal covering scope, schedule and compensation. Design moves from concepts to a master plan to construction documents, followed by permitting, contractor selection and construction.

How long does a project take?

It depends on the size of the project and where it is. Permitting in particular varies by town and site. We'll outline a timeframe in your proposal.

What should I bring to our first meeting?

A topographic survey of your property, especially if you're considering a pool. Photos of landscapes you like, from magazines, Houzz or Pinterest, are also helpful.

Can I see the design before it's built?

Yes. We can show you your project in 3D before construction begins.

Do you handle permits?

Yes. We coordinate permitting with engineering firms we work with regularly.

Do you build the project?

We design it and help assemble the right team to build it. We then support construction by answering contractors' questions in the field. You can use contractors from our network or bring your own.
